A rent receipt is a landlord's written proof that a tenant paid rent. It should show the payment date, amount, the rental period it covers, the property address, the tenant and landlord names, and the payment method. Several states require landlords to give a receipt for cash rent or on the tenant's request, so keeping a copy protects both sides.

Questions
Do landlords have to provide rent receipts?+
It depends on the state. Several states require a landlord to give a receipt for rent paid in cash, and some require one for any payment on the tenant's request. Even where it is not required, providing a receipt is standard practice because it protects both parties if a payment is ever disputed.
What information goes on a rent receipt?+
A complete rent receipt shows the date of payment, the amount paid, the rental period it covers, the property address, the tenant's and landlord's names, the payment method (cash, check, or transfer), and a signature or initials from whoever received the payment.
Is a rent receipt the same as a rent ledger?+
No. A rent receipt documents a single payment, while a rent ledger is the running record of every charge and payment across the tenancy. Landlords typically issue a receipt each time rent is paid and keep the ledger as the full payment history.
